Mary E. Harkins has practiced law since 1989. Out of law school, she was recruited into the United States Justice Department’s Honor Program and served as staff counsel to the United States Trustee in Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia. After leaving the Justice Department, she entered private practice.

Over the past 15 years, Ms. Harkins has represented thousands of clients throughout Virginia on a variety of legal matters. She has tried over 100 jury trials, including 7 first degree murder trials, and several other felony criminal cases, personal injury cases, will contests, and general litigation matters. She has represented clients on dozens of appeals to the Virginia Court of Appeals, the Virginia Supreme Court, and the United States Courts of Appeal for the Third and Fourth Circuits. Ms. Harkins has represented hundreds of clients in family law matters, including divorce, child custody & support, adoption, premarital agreements, and has served as the Commissioner in Chancery in several family law matters. She has also represented clients in federal and state False Claims Act "qui tam" actions and in Virginia Trade Secrets Act misappropriation cases.

Ms. Harkins is admitted to practice in all state courts of Virginia, North Carolina and the District of Columbia. She is also admitted to the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the District of Columbia, the United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
